Talwandi Sabo/ Sunam, Punjab (August 05, 2014): A day after singer-turned-politician Balkar Sidhu filed his nomination papers as Independent candidate for the Talwandi Sabho assembly bye-election after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) cancelled his ticket, party MP from Sangrur Lok Sabha seat Bhagwant Mann said on August 04 that he would do his best to convince Balkar Sidhu to withdraw his candidature.

“Balkar is like my younger brother and I will do my best to convince him as his move to contest as Independent will benefit the SAD candidate”, said comedian- turned- politician Bhagwant Mann, who is also Aam Aadmi Party MP from Sangrur.

“I am happy over Sidhu’s statement that he wants to win Talwandi Sabo by-election for Arvind Kejriwal, but I will talk to him that his move will harm the prospects of the AAP candidate”, said Bhagwant Mann, who has close relations with Balkar Sidhu.

Bhagwant Mann had earlier convinced the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership to announce Balkar Sidhu for AAP ticket from Talwandi Sabo constituency, which is heading of by-election on August 21.

The Aam Aadmi Party had cancelled ticket of Balkar Sidhu after his name surfaced in a case related to human trafficing in which a Punjabi girl was transported to Cananda and was allegedly kept servent at the house of one of Balkar Sidhu’s relatives.

After cancelling ticket of Balkar Sidhu, the Aam Aadmi Party had granted party ticket to a young teacher Balwinder Kaur.

It was being believed that Balkar Sidhu had support of Bagwant Mann as independent candidate. But now Bhagwant Mann has said that he want Balkar Sidhu to withdraw.

“He (Sidhu) is quite young and has long innings to play. First, he should come clean on allegations, then the party will definitely recognise his dedication as he has been one of the oldest members of the party in Punjab”, he added.

On a question about campaigning against Sidhu, who had openly campaigned for Bhagwant Mann in the Lok Sabha elections, Mann said, “Neither Talwandi Sabo nor Patiala are in my constituency, but I am a true soldier of the party and will do my duty with honesty.”

“No doubt, Balkar had campaigned for me but I will go by the party’s decision and campaign for candidates of the party as my fight is against corruption,” he said. On whether he had facilitated the Aam Aadmi party ticket to Balkar Sidhu, Bhagwant Mann said, “The decision to filed him from Talwandi Sabo was taken by the parliamentary affairs committee (PAC) of the party as they chose Sidhu among the three candidates. But, now the PAC itself has decided to change the candidate. I did not play any role in selection or rejection of the candidate.”

On reports that the cancellation of Sidhu’s ticket has come as a jolt to Mann, he said, “The decision was taken by all senior leaders of the party, how come you can call it a jolt to me.”
