London: The first University screening of documentary ‘Outjusticed 2’ took place late last week at Kings College London in the UK, leaving audience members speechless. The documentary produced by Sikh Siyasat is the second in a series titled ‘OutJusticed – the untold stories’ and follows the 2012 incident at Gurdaspur where Punjab Police firing led to the death of Sikh student Bhai Jaspal Singh.

Students applauded the investigative work of the documentary and widely commented that it “is a must watch for every Sikh and Punjabi”. Amongst those at the first screening, one student stated that, “This was a really eye-opening documentary that has got me thinking about what little I have done in the five years since this incident. It is shocking that we [Sikhs] have allowed this injustice to be carried out.

Although the entire documentary is presented in Punjabi, English subtitles have allowed the story to reach an audience far removed from everyday life in Punjab, and this is having a huge impact on them. Harwinder Singh Mander, founder of UK-based naujawani who are hosting the screenings said, “’Outjusticed 2’ provides much needed context to the events of 2012 that awoke so many Sikhs in the west and we are pleased that it has been so well received on its first screening. Not only does it provide an analysis of why Sikhs continue to suffer injustice in the subcontinent, but it highlights the gross miscarriage of justice in the specific case of Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur. His is a story that touches Sikhs of every age, but perhaps holds greater weight with those enrolled in Higher Education, as he was.”

Mander continued, “The expert contributions in the documentary are incredibly insightful, but it is the way in which the documentary unfolds that makes this an excellent work. Much credit goes to the producers for that – it made this a most-welcome addition to the London University Sikh society’s programme of events, and I was especially pleased that the prestigious Kings College London could host the first screenings in the UK.”

The film has a second screening for London University students this Wednesday again at Kings College London and will then return to Universities across the UK in the next semester. It is being shown in a number of towns and cities around the UK over the seasonal holidays, more information on those including requesting a screening can be found at https://naujawani.com/outjusticed-2.
