Patiala court withdraws summons issued to Guru Granth Sahib

Patiala: A Patiala court has reportedly withdrawn the summons that were issued to Guru Granth Sahib. Taking back the wrongfully issued summons the court reissued the same to the managing committee/manager/head granthi of Gurdwara Sahib of Maddo Majra village.

The court’s move to issue summons to the Gurdwara Sahib through the Guru Granth Sahib had drawn flak from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh organizations.

The court’s move to withdraw and reissue the summons came in wake of petitioner Gurnaib Singh requested for amendment in memos of the parties. Taking up the application, civil judge, senior division, Ramandeep Neetu, issued the amended notice, which was received by advocate BL Sharma, present in the court on behalf of the respondent (Gurdwara Sahib).

As per information one kanal of land adjoining the Gurdwara Sahib at Maddo Majra village, which was purchased by a resident, Baldev Singh, and donated to the Gurdwara Sahib. The donation, however, was challenged in the court by Gurnaib Singh asserting possession of the land for past few years.

A local court of Ramandeep Neetu, Civil Judge (Junior Division), had issued notice to “Gurdwara Sahib of Maddo Majra, through Shri Guru Granth Sahib”.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, while talking to the media, welcomed the court’s decision to rectify its error. He said the SGPC had directed its legal wing to assist the Gurdwara, if it needed legal help.
