Mumbai, India (August 23, 2013): As per media reports the gangrape of a young photojournalist in Mumbai (India) has triggered an outrage across the country on August 23, 2013 with protests taking place in many cities.
Political parties, journalists and the common people took to the streets to demand harshest punishment for the perpetrators of the crime in a city, which has always been considered safe for women.
According to IBNLive “[a] 23-year-old photojournalist was allegedly gangraped by five men on Thursday evening at Shakti Mill in Parel area of Central Mumbai. The woman was accompanied by a male colleague, who was gagged and bound while she was raped”.
According to Indian Express: “Police on Friday arrested a ‘jobless youth’ and mounted a manhunt for four other accused, solving within 24 hours Thursday night’s gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai amid massive public outrage”.
Safety of women in India is a growing social concern. It is notable that ‘India’, as is called to give a collective entity to the people residing in this peninsula, is outraged over the incidents of rape/gangrape in main-land India, while it remains silent when it’s security forces rape women in areas look at as ‘disturbed areas’ such as Kashmir and Manipur etc.
