Ludhiana (May 29, 2011): Former Punjab Chief Minister and current chief of Punjab Congress Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday sought clemency for Professor Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar after his constitutional review petition was rejected by Indian President Pratibha Patil.
“Killing Bhullar would not solve the problem” Amrinder Singh added.
“Bhullar has spent sixteen years in prison. You can keep him in prison but by killing another man you are not solving a problem. I am against capital punishment,” Amrinder Singh is said to have told reporters in Chandigarh.
Meanwhile, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee chief Paramjit Singh Sarna said he was confident that Bhullar would get judicial relieve.
“An educated person and able person like Devender Pal Singh Bhullar was made to give his thumb impression rather than signature. There are many things according to which he shouldn’t be hanged, but given clemency. We are confident that we will get relieve from court,” Sarna is reported to have said in Bhatinda.
“We are very confident, 100 percent confident that we get relieve from court. In case we don’t get relieve from court we will file mercy petition again,” he added.
Earlier, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had urged Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to intervene and prevent the death sentence of the Prof. DPS Bhullar.
Various major Sikh bodies, including SGPC and DSGMC, and representatives of all factions of Shiromani Akali Dal, Sikh Students Federation, and other Panthic bodies, besides Human Rights Organizations are going to hold a joint meeting at Gurudwara Singh Sabha, Ludhiana tomorrow; the 30th of May.
“Our purpose is to bring all Sikh bodies and political parties to single platform to send strong resentment against center’s decision” informed Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, secretary of Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani), the party that has convened the meeting.
“Mata Upkar Kaur, mother of Prof. Bhullar shall also attend the meeting”, HS Cheema added.
