Ludhiana (May 28, 2011): The President of India’s decision to reject death row convict Devinderpal Singh Bhullar’s petition seeking clemency, filed under article 72 of the Consitution, on Wednesday after keeping it in abeyance for eight years has drawn flak from Bhullar’s wife Navneet Kaur Bhullar.
In a telephonic conversation, Canada-based Navneet said, “I am shocked. The previous BJP government had assured us that they have recommended clemency for my husband. This means that they had actually not done so. It is strange that the Government of India would take a decision out of turn and has applied the pick and choose policy. Similar petitions filed by the people accused of killing late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were submitted before us. Without taking a decision on those petitions why did the President of India take a decision of my husband’s petition?”.
