Punjab Assembly Polls on 30 January; Results on 4 March; Code of conduct imposed

Chandigarh, Punjab (December 23, 2011): The Election Commission of India (ECI) Saturday announced to hold Punjab assembly elections on January 30 in the first phase of month long election schedule announce for five states.

Elections will be held to the Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand assemblies between Jan 28 and March 3, 2012, and votes will be counted March 4.

With this announcement, “Code of Conduct” is has become operative in Punjab.

The election code of conduct has come into force in Punjab and other states with immediate effect. Kusumjit Kaur Sidhu Chief Election Officer Punjab said that all arrangements to hold the elections have been completed. She said that election code of conduct has been imposed in the state.

In Punjab estimated 1.75 crore voters shall elect new Governments, certain sections of media has reported.

It is notable that ruling SAD (Badal) has already announced 42 candidates.  Bharti Janta Party (BJP) Congress Party, BSP and joint from formed by People’s Party of Punjab and Left Parties are other major contestants. SAD (Mann) has also announced to contest all 117 seats and has already announced candidates from some constituencies.

Election Commission has announced certain measures to curb widely accepted fact of manipulation of election process through money, man and muscle power.

In this regard Punjab had a bitter experience of manipulation of elections process during SGPC elections held on September 18, 2011. Thousands of legally ineligible persons voted during SGPC elections, and complaints to the relevant Election Commission and even Home Ministry of India was never entertained.
