Punjab Bandh Latest: Peermohmad, Bibi Jagdish Kaur, others arrested; Police lathi-charge Sikhsin Amritsar

Amritsar, Punjab: Latest news updates related to 1 November Punjab bandh call reveals that the Punjab police crackdown to defuse Punjab Bandh call has resulted in arrest of Karnail Singh Peermohmad (President, AISSF), Bibi Jagdish Kaur (victim, survivor and witness of Sikh genocide 1984) Bibi Majit Kaur (Head of Bhai Fauja Singh Trust) besides dozens other Sikh activists.

Bibi Jagdish Kaur and others were arrested by the police from Amritsar bus stand at around 4:30 am while they were heading Amritsar railway station. According to an update by Sikhs for Justice a police party led by ACP Central Manminder Singh arrested the Sikh activists forcibly.

There are reports that the police cane charged some Sikhs at Jauda Fatak (Jauda railway crossing) while they were attempting to block the railway track.

An update by PunjabTimeLine says: “[a] train Shatabadi express only could steamed off from Amritsar, which was stopped at Ludhiana along with other trains but the more Sikh activists reached at Railway station and staged protest in Amritsar”.

Images of these arrests have gone viral over social media. As per information the Sikh activists were pushed into a mini-bus by the police and were taken to to Makbulpura police station in Amritsar.

It is notable that BJP leader Lakshami Kanta Chawla had warned Badal government against Punjab Bandh. Hindutva leader had demanded that the Badal government should ensure that no disturbances are allowed in road and railway traffic.

The Punjab Bandh or Punjab shut down call was given by All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) and victims-survivors of the Sikh Genocide 1984 as a token protest against denial of justice to the victims of Sikh genocide 1984. The organizers of the Punjab Bandh were appealing to all sections of the society to observe shut down and show sympathy with the cause.
