Punjab Politics: Millions wasted on Dharnas, while De-addiction Centers lie Defunct, says HS Phoolka

January 7, 2015 | By

Ludhiana: Criticizing the much publicized dharnas being held by the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), against alleged influx of drugs into the state from the international borders, Aam Aadmi party leader Harvinder Singh Phoolka said that the ruling party is carrying out this useless exercise at a huge cost, whereas the drug de addiction infrastructure in the state is totally defunct and non functional. This is an absolute gimmick aimed at fooling the people.

A release by HS Phoolka says [w]hen the Aam Aadmi party Ludhiana team visited the two Government run De-Addiction Centers in Ludhiana, they were found to be in an abysmal state.

AAP district Convener Ahbaab Singh Grewal said that when our team went to these centers, we found that not only did these centers lack proper facilities but were very surprisingly functioning without doctors and they did not have the necessary medicines for the addicts who told us that they have been waiting for weeks now to see a doctor or get medicines for their addiction. Out of the two Govt run centers, one is totally useless as in the absence of doctors there no addict could be admitted the staff told us that conditions had been like this for quite a while now. Whereas the main de-addiction centers in civil hospital was staffed only by a nurse and the four patients there had been waiting to see a doctor for days now. We were told by the staff that a doctor visits the center twice a week, but in the absence of a psychiatrist nobody could prescribe the required medicine to the addicts.

Ahbaab Singh Grewal said that it is very surprising that the ruling party is indulging in a blame game and is trying to malign the image of the BSF soldiers.

“Whereas the actual problem of psychotropic drugs and injections, which is totally homegrown is being brushed under the carpet by the SAD” said Grewal.

“If they are really serious about tackling this menace they should at least provide the basic de-addiction facilities and try to catch the real culprits who act with impunity under political patronage” he added.

“By trying to indulge in political gimmickry both and one-upmanship both SAD and the BJP are trying to project themselves as the saviors of the people while the fact is that they have both benefitted from this dirty trade” said AAP leader.
