Punjab shuts down to protest against Ludhiana incident

Ludhiana (December 7, 2009): Today’s shut down, declared by various Sikh organizations to protest against anti-Sikh policies of Punjab Government, received major response from people of Punjab. Almost all major cities and towns witnessed nearly complete shut down today.

Patiala: In Patiala, shops and business establishments were closed in Dharmpura Bazar, Sher-e- Punjab Market, Anardana Chowk, Adalat Bazar, Sadar Bazar etc. Where as few shops were opened in Arya Samaj area which is highly a Hindu dominated area.

Here, Akali MC Kanwaljit Singh Gona was arrested  along with his associates in Anardana Chowk area. District police claimed that they were taken in custody as a precautionary measure.

However, in Patiala, Banks and government schools were open and private schools have declared holiday for today.

Phagwara: A complete bandh was observed in Phagwara here on Monday. Normal life remained paralyzed during Punjab bandh. Buses and other vehicles could hardly been seen on the roads while schools and colleges remained closed. However govt. offices and banks worked normally but few customers were seen in their premises.

The route of Delhi-Lahore bus was diverted from Phagwara via Rahon-Samrala-Khanna.

Ludhiana and Other Cities: Reports of complete shut down of shops, schools and other commercial institutions have been received from Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. As per PTI reports “shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions, including schools, are completely closed in many parts of the state. The bandh is peaceful so far as no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state, officials said.”

The PTI report further says that at some places like Jalandhar, Patiala, Faridkot, Bathinda and Batala members owing allegiance to various Sikh organizations, including Sikh Students Federation, forced several shop owners to pull down shutters of their establishments.

BFUHS postpones annual examinations due to Punjab Bandh

Patiala/ Faridkot: As per news reported by Gagandeep Ahuja from Patiala, Baba Farid University of Health sciences has postponed its annual examination of all classes scheduled for Monday (December 7 ). Dr. SS Shergill told over phone  that University has taken this step on the demand of students. The next date will be intimated in due course, he added.

University has taken this step due to Punjab Bandh called by various Sikh organizations on Ludhiana incidents, said sources.

Road & Rail Traffic and Medical Services were exempted:

It is notable that almost all media reports regarding Punjab shutdown have pointed that road transport and railway traffic remained unaffected by Punjab bandh call. “It is not so. In order to avoid undue inconvenience to general public, the road transport and railways were exempted along with medical services” said various leaders of Sikh organizations, when contacted by SikhSiyasat Network.
