Punjab to enact life term for beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib

March 8, 2016 | By

Chandigarh: As per media reports the Punjab government is considering introducing an amendment Bill in the Budget Session of the state assembly to enhance punishment for committing the beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib. The proposed amendment would provide for life imprisonment for committing beadbi of Guru Granth Shaib.

A draft of the Bill proposes that Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) should be amended in its application to Punjab and include life imprisonment for causing “injury, damage or sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib with the intent to hurt religious feelings”.

At present, Section 295 of IPC deals with offences related to injuring or defiling places of worship with intent to insult religious feelings and carries a punishment of two years in jail. For all other religions, the Punjab draft Bill proposes an increase in punishment from “two years to 10 years”.

Notably the Punjab government had declared to enhance the punishment in cases related to beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib after it faced tough times in wake of repeated incidents of Beadbi of Guru Granth Shaib in later quarter of last year. It is further notable that the Punjab government is “unable” to trace culprits of incidents of Beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib at Bargari and Malke villages near Kotkapura.
