Phagwara, Punjab (May 31, 2012): As per reports on May 30, 2012 the “Istri Jagriti Manch” – IJM (Women awareness platform) staged a demonstration outside the house of Punjabi Singer Geeta Jaildar to warn him against his objectionable songs derogatory to the honour of women.
It is notable that the movement was sparked by Punjabi Singer Daljit’s song “Pandran Saal ton Ghat” (song referred to girl below the age of 15 years) in which vulgar and objectionable comments were passed against girls. IJM, had held a demonstration at Ludhiana outside residence of Daljit on 27 December last year.
IJM leader Gurbax Kaur Sangha blamed these singers for polluting the culture of Punjab by damaging public morality and cultural values of Punjab. She accused Central and State governments for indirectly promoting such sort of singing.
She warned that if music companies and Punjabi singers fail to stop vulgar and objectionable songs this movement shall take sharp turn. Hundreds of women participated in yesterday’s protest.
It is notable that legislation prohibiting indecent representation of women was passed way back in 1986 in India and it is still in force but the Governments or the judiciary is paying no heed to the presentation of women in indecent and highly objectionable manner in commercial advertisements and songs.
