Amritsar, Punjab (May 06, 2013): The Sant Samaj, led by Damdami Taksal (Chowk Mehta) chief Baba Harman Singh, organized a march from headquarters of Damdami Taksal to Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and submitted a memorandum to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib.
The purpose of march was to convey the stand of Damdami Taksal and allied members of Sant Samaj on the naming of Saka June 1984 martyrs’ memorial (Gurudwara Yaadgaar Shaheedan) after the name of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other martyrs of Saka June 1984.
As per media reports Baba Harnam Singh and other leaders of Sant Samaj led a procession comprising heads of various Sikh religious bodies to the Sri Darbar Sahib complex at Amritsar to present a memorandum in to Giani Gurbachan Singh, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib.
The convoy reprotedly consisted of around 60 vehicles, including five minibuses.
According to Hindustan Times (HT) “[t]here were apprehension that a number of Sant Samaj leaders might back out of the march, but this did not happen. The SGPC had contacted many of them and tried to persuade them to keep away from Mehta Chowk”.
In it’s memorandum tendered to Giani Gurbachan Singh the Sant Samaj has insisted that Damdami Taksal had not committed any breach of trust by naming the memorial after the names of martyrs, as is claimed by SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar.
Sant Samaj has quoted the May 05, 2012 resolution adopted by SGPC that clearly mentions that the memorial shall be build in the memory of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other martyrs of Saka June 1984.
On the presence of the names of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Bhai Amrik Singh, Sirdar General Shahbeg Singh and Baba Thara Singh on the board in the ‘parikrama’, the memorandum again emphasized that this was also in accordance with a decision taken by the five-member sub-committee formed by the SGPC for deciding on the spot for the memorial.
