New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India (SCI) today dismissed appeal field by National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India against bail granted to Scottish national Jagtar Singh alias Jaggi Johal.
Jagtar Singh’s defense counsel and chairman of Panjaab Lawyers Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that NIA had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court India seeking cancellation of bail to Jagtar Singh Jaggi Johal in case number RC/24/2017/NIA.
Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone that this case was argued on Jagtar Singh Jaggi’s behalf in the Supreme Court of India by Senior Advocate R. Basant, retired justice of Kerala High Court.
About This Case:
In February 2016 Shiv Sena leader Amit Arora had alleged that he was attacked by two unknown persons. The Punjab police had registered a case on his complaint. But after investigation the police maintained that the attack was orchestrated by Amit Arora himself to secure police protection. Amit Arora was even arrested by police in June 2016 in this case. After arrest of Jagtar Singh Jaggi and others in November 2017 the police, however, changed its stance and maintained that the attack on Amit Arora was real. The case was later transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Earlier Proceedings Regarding Bail in this Case: A NIA special court in Mohali dismissed bail application moved by Jagtar Singh Johal alia Jaggi in RC/24/2017/NIA on 24 June 2020.
A bench of justice Tejinder Singh Dhindsa and Justice Lalit Batra of Punjab and Haryana High Court granted bail to Jagtar Singh Johal on 15 March 2022 in this case.
Later NIA field an appeal in the Supreme Court of India seeking cancellation of bail granted to Jagtar Singh Johal by the High Court. The SCI stayed the bail order passed by Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Today, on 8 August 2023, the SCI dismissed appeal field by the NIA while upholding the judgement of Punjab and Haryana High Court granting bail to Jagtar Singh Jaggi in RC/24/2017/NIA case.
What’s Next:
Today’s verdict enables Jagtar Singh Jaggi to furnish bail in RC/24/2017/NIA case. But as he faces other cases, his release is not possible at the moment. According to Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur of Panjaab Lawyers, the defense team of Jagtar Singh Jaggi is pursuing his bail application in other cases. Today’s verdict strengthens his chances of bail in other cases, said Advocate Manjhpur.
