New Delhi: Indian Supreme Court held a mid-night hearing on Yakub Memon’s plea against execution of death sentence after the President of India rejected his review petition late last evening.
In a court hearing that reportedly concluded at around 5 a.m. Yakub Memon was hanged at around 6:30 a.m. in Nagpur jail today (30 July) which also happened to be his 53rd birthday.
Notably Indian President Pranab Mukherjee rejected Yakub Memon’s last minute petition against death sentence sent to him on Wednesday.
Activists and Memon’s lawyers had told the Supreme Court in a late-night appeal that after a mercy plea is rejected, the death row prisoner can’t be hanged for 14 days, according to rules.
However, the three Supreme Court judges who heard the case accepted the government’s argument that Memon had “ample opportunity” to challenge his sentencing.
