SGPC Halts Release of Controversial Film Nanak Shah Fakir

March 29, 2018 | By

Amritsar: After the outrage from the Sikh panth over the proposed release of controversial movie Nanak Shah Fakir, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) today announced to halt its release.

It is notable that the controversial film produced by Harinder Sikka was strongly opposed by the Sikh panth in 2015 when it was first released and after the film faced stiff opposition from the Sikhs, it was then withdrawn by the producer. The film violates the Sikh tenets as it attempts to personify Sikh Gurus, a practise that is strictly prohibited in the Sikh tradition.

This time, Harinder Sikka had announced to release the controversial movie on April 13 (Vasakhi) with the support of SGPC.

The SGPC also became target of Sikh anger after a letter issued by SGPC secretary directing managers of the all Gurdwaras and administration of all educational institutions under its control to promote the movie. The Sikh body was facing severe criticism for extending support to a movie which violates the Sikh tenets.

In a letter issued on Thursday (March 29), the SGPC secretary Daljit Singh Bedi said that the SGPC has halted the release of Nanak Shah Fakir movie in wake of Sikh sentiments. He said that the action of letters issued by the SGPC in support of the film is also halted.

As an initial reaction to the development, Panthic circles have stated that its’ partial success. As the producer could still try to release the move or may make further attempt in future, therefore the film should be confiscated and discarded in the Panthic interest.
