SGPC Seeks Ban on Harinder Sikka’s Nanak Shah Fakir Film

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhdandak Committee (SGPC) today sought ban on Harinder Sikka’s controversial film Nanak Shah Fakir. In a written statement issued this evening, SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal said that he has written letters to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Home Minister Ranjath Singh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smirti Irani and Punjab’s Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh seeking complete ban on release of Nanak Shah Fakir film.

SGPC chief said that the SGPC had called a meeting to review the controversial film in wake of strong opposition to the release of the film by the Sikh sangat but film producer Harinder Sikka deliberately failed to attend the meeting. SGPC chief said that as the film producer announcing to release the film on April 13 in all cases, the SGPC decided to approach the authorities to impose ban on release or screening of the controversial film.

Gobind Singh Longowal said that given the sentiments being expressed by the Sikh sangat, the release of the film if bound hurt the Sikh feelings.

It is notable that the film producer has attempted to release the film in 2015 also. That time too the release of the film had faced strong opposition and the then Punjab government had banned the release of movie in Punjab. In wake of global outrage the film producer had withdrawn the film.
