SGPC to seek registration of Sikh marriages under Anand Marriage Act 1909

Amritsar/Chandigarh: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Avatar Singh Makkar said that the SGPC will seek implementation of provisions providing for registration of Sikh marriage under the Anand Marriage Act. While talking to media persons Avtar Singh Makkar claimed that the SGPC has been raising this issue with the state government for last 3 years and a fresh request will be sent soon.

His statement came in wake of a recent revelation of the fact that the Haryana government has already implemented the provision for registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand Marriage Act.

It may be noted here that the Sikhs have been denied their personal law in India as soon after the partition of 1947 Sikhs were subjected to newly codified Hindu personal law (1956-56).

As the demand of Sikh personal law grew stronger, the Central government passed an amendment in 2012 to provide for registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand Marriage Act of 1909.

Experts believe that the the 2012 move was “too little and too late”, as it provides only for the registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand Marriage Act, whereas other provisions of Hindu Marriage Act and other enactments of Hindu personal law will remain applicable on Sikhs.

A RTI moved by a Chandigarh based lawyer revealed that even the Punjab state government failed to implement the registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand marriage act during last 3 years.
