Shaheed Beant Singh’s son Sarabjit Singh joins BSP; May contest Lok Sabha elections from Fatehgarh Sahib

Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab (March 12, 2014): It is learnt that Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, son of Shaheed Beant Singh, joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on March 10, 2014.

Sarabjit Singh, who had unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections in 2004 from Bathinda on the Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann) ticket, joined the BSP in the presence of its Punjab unit president Parkash Singh Jandali and other leaders. He had also unsuccessfully contested Punjab assembly election from Bhadaur constituency in 2007 on Mann Dal’s ticket.

According to certain media reports the BSP is likely to field Sarabjit Singh as its candidate for upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Fatehgarh Sahib Reserve Constituency, party sources said.

When contacted, Sarabjit Singh reportedly told PTI news agency that it was up to the BSP leadership to decide on the matter.

On being asked that what prompted him to join the BSP, he reportedly said that BSP was a party of Dalit community.

It may be recalled that Shaheed Beant Singh and Satwant Singh had assassinated Indian Prime Minsiter Indira Gandhi on October 31,1984. Indira Gandhi had ordered army attack at Darbar Sahib (Amritsar) besides various other Sikh Gurdwaras in June 1984. The Indian army had massacred thousands of Sikh in June 1984 attack that was code-named as “operation blue star”.
