It is notable that Jaswinder Singh’s father Bhai Beant Singh had laid his life to grant punishment to Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her atrocities on the Sikh nation.

Indira Gandhi had launched armed attack at Darbar Sahib (Amritsar) and dozens of other Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab and adjoining states in June 1984. This attack was code named as “Operation Bluestar” and thousands of Sikhs were massacred by the Indian army. Army had used tanks to destroy the building/ structure of Akal Takht Sahib. The Sikh national library called “the Sikh Reference Library” was also reduced to ashes by the Indian Army.

On 31 October 1984 Bhai Beant Singh along with Bhai Satwant Singh punished Indira Gandhi by assassinating her. Bhai Beant Singh was killed by some other body guards of Indira Gandhi, while Bhai Satwant Singh was granted death punishment along with Bhai Kehar Singh. They were martyred by the Indian state on 6 January 1989.

Bhai Beant Singh, along with Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh, were declared as “national Sikh martyrs” by the Akal Takht Sahib. Their martyrdom days are also marked at Akal Takht Sahib annually.
