Amritsar: Representatives of various Sikh organizations met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to exercise his ‘authority’ to secure the release of Sikh political prisoners languishing in various jails across the country despite completion of their sentence.
A delegation comprising representatives of various Sikh organizations, including Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann) and Akal Purakh Ki Fauj, handed over a memorandum to Akal Takht Jatehdar Giani Gurbachan Singh on January 01 and said that the Jathedar should direct the states and the Centre to expedite the release of the detainees instead of indulging in mere holding of meetings.
On the other hand, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh terms the matter related to Sikh ‘political’ prisoners as a ‘judicial matter’. He said a panel of lawyers would be formed to conduct the feasibility study of these cases.
Certain media outlets have reported that Giani Gurbachan Singh said that the Supreme Court of India had barred the release of the detainees.
“We approached the India’s Home Ministry as the matter is not under the state government’s jurisdiction. We have received positive signals and some concrete measures will be taken shortly,” he said.
