Sikh body lashes out at Badals, Punjab govt. over DGP Sumedh Saini’s statement regarding Sikh political prisoners

January 8, 2015 | By

Hoshiarpur, Punjab: Dal Khalsa today asked Punjab’s Chief Minister and home minister Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal to explain to the people as to why the police leadership was “authorized” to speak on their behalf on the issue of Sikh political prisoners.

Party head H S Dhami and spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh questioned the political leadership to tell whether “Punjab is still a police state or do they lack confidence and credibility to speak on burning issues”.

They said the issue of Sikh detainees was political hence it was the domain and responsibility of the political leadership to clear the mess.

“Unfortunately, it was top cop, who announced that the state government would soon move the SC to seek the release of convicts who fulfill the policy conditions”. He slammed Badals for allowing the DGP to give a policy statement on behalf of the govt.

Joining issue with the DGP that premature release was a concession and not a matter of right, they asked who decides as to who is eligible for concession and to what extent. “It’s obvious that those who are at helm of affairs decide the fate of a convict as it has been done in the case of police cat Gurmeet Singh Pinki and many more”, they said and asked was the nature of crime committed by Pinki not serious enough that he too should have remain behind bars for his entire life.

Detesting the state police chief’s version, the Dal Khalsa activists allege that the issue to give premature release to a convict depends upon whose side he was and not on ‘nature of crime’. To drive their point home, they said Pinki fought for the state whereas the six detainees whose release Sikhs have sought fought against the state and it’s this consideration that’s creating hurdle in latter’s release.

They condemned the police crackdown on Sikh political activists in the state since last night to prevent them in mobilizing the support for the cause. “We strongly condemn the arrests and caution the government “not to flare up the situation with its tyrannical approach”.
