Sikh Coalition, Ensaaf and Human Rights Watch write to Obama seeking Justice for 1984 Anti-Sikh Massacres

November 4, 2014 | By

Washington, DC: The Sikh Coalition, in partnership with Ensaaf and Human Rights Watch, sent a letter to US President Barack Obama, on Nov. 03 (2014), urging him to support justice for the 1984 anti-Sikh massacres, which claimed the lives of thousands of Sikhs throughout India 30 years ago.

Noting that the architects of the premeditated violence have escaped justice, the letter calls upon the Obama Administration and the State Department to prioritize this issue in its engagement with India.

The Sikh Coalition has urged it’s supporters to get involved for extending helping hands to the survivors of the Sikh genocide 1984. “As the survivors of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms continue their struggle for justice in India, we encourage Sikh Coalition supporters to take action in support of justice and remembrance” reads a community update by the Sikh Coalition.

The Sikh Coalition has suggested four ways to it’s supporters in which they could take action:

(1) Support the Widows and Orphans who Lost Loved Ones in 1984
(2) Tell Members of US Congress to Support Justice for 1984
(3) Record Your Story on the 1984 Living History Website
(4) Apply for a “Connecting with 1984” Small Grant (U.S. only)

A Sikh Coalition newsletter says: [t]hirty years ago, Indian government and police officials attempted genocide against the Sikh minority in India. The 1984 massacres occurred within our lifetimes, but with each passing year, the likelihood of securing justice grows dimmer, and the world remains largely ignorant about what happened. In this context, the Sikh Coalition urges its supporters to continue raising this issue in every possible forum – in the classroom, in the media, in the halls of the U.S. Congress – so that we ensure that these crimes are never repeated, forgotten, or left unpunished.
