Leicester, England: In a press release issued yesterday (June 18), the Sikh Council UK said that its “Board of Jathedars” have unanimously agreed to establish a framework for dealing with concerns regarding parcharaks in the UK at a meeting at Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara Leicester on Saturday 9th June 2018. The meeting took place following the incident at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Southall last month.

“The Board of Jathedars have agreed to take collective responsibility for dealing with concerns received regarding parcharaks to the Board of Jathedars Convenors and to provide guidance and recommendations as appropriate. “The Board of Jathedars is the scrutiny and advisory body of the Sikh Council UK whose mandate includes providing a facility for grievance and dispute resolution. The composition of the 21 member Board of Jathedars is diverse and includes scholars, parcharaks, senior Gurdwara management members and Sikh organisations representatives. Together they have many years of experience and service and collectively represent a cross section of views and interests within the UK Sikh community”.

Sikh Council UK Secretary General Jagtar Singh who facilitated the meeting said “I welcome the unanimous decision taken by the Board of Jathedars and the collective leadership shown in seeking to provide a mechanism for the management and resolution of concerns and to maintain community harmony and prevent disorder. Sikh Council UK is committed towards creating a positive environment for the sangat and parcharaks and will work closely with all parties towards this end”.

The Joint Convenors of the Board of Jathedars Joga Singh and Kuldip Singh Chiheru said “We request any concerns by parcharaks or about parcharaks to be communicated in writing to the Conveners. There is a diversity of views within the Sikh faith and Sikh parcharaks on a range of issues and the Board of Jathedars are moving forward on a shared understanding that all Sikhs have a collective responsibility to resolve any issues to do with parcharaks through dialogue and de-escalate any tensions where they arise.”
