27 November 2024 – In a written statement issued on 27 November 2024, the Sikh Federation of Australia has called for an immediate review of all agreements between the Australian Government and the Adani Group following the company’s recent indictment by US authorities.
“The charges raise serious concerns about Adani’s business practices, including corruption and environmental violations”, the statement reads.
Ajit Singh, spokesperson of the Sikh Federation of Australia said: “[t]here are concerns that individuals close to the India’s Modi government have worked with Australian politicians to secure deals with Adani, raising questions about undue foreign influence on Australian politics”. “Additionally, there is growing unease within diaspora communities regarding the sudden wealth of these individuals, which suggests potential conflicts of interest or other inappropriate practices. Given the scope of India’s aggressive foreign interference activities around the world, there is also considerable concern regarding the 2014 visit of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, which is believed to have advanced Adani’s interests in Australia”, he added.
“In light of these developments, we urge the Australian Government to investigate the Adani Group’s activities, particularly concerning the Carmichael coal mine, to ensure that agreements and business practices align with Australia’s legal, environmental, and ethical standards.
The Sikh Federation of Australia is committed to justice, fairness, and human rights, and calls for accountability to protect the interests of all Australians”, the statement reads.
