London, UK: Dabinderjit Singh, Lead Executive for Political Engagement at the Sikh Federation (UK), has issued a statement (copy available with SSN) urging the UK and other nations to address transnational repression allegedly carried out by the Indian government against Sikh activists abroad. His comments come in response to the recent diplomatic crisis between Canada and India following the assassination of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Canada based Sikh activist on Canadian soil.

“When the shocking news from Canada broke earlier today, we were in the UK Parliament briefing Parliamentarians about the transnational repression and political interference of the Indian government aimed at Sikhs in the Diaspora campaigning for a sovereign Sikh State, Khalistan,” Dabinderjit Singh said on Monday (October 14).

“The Sikh Federation (UK) highlighted reports that six high-ranking Indian diplomats in Canada have been implicated in gathering intelligence on pro-Khalistan activists, who were later targeted by criminal proxies, allegedly backed by India”, he said.

Dabinderjit Singh called this revelation a “wake-up call” for the UK Government and other members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, urging them to confront India’s alleged interference and human rights violations.

“Leading Canadian Sikh activists, Moninder Singh and Prabjot Singh told UK MPs and peers earlier today that the killing of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh leader on Canadian soil and India’s arrogance that they could literally get away with ‘murder’ had resulted in the political will in Canada to expose India on the international stage for having no respect for the rule of law and Canada’s sovereignty.”

Dabinderjit Singh further called on global leaders to follow Canada’s example, accusing India of “bully-boy tactics” and expressing solidarity with Sikhs fighting for their right to self-determination. He urged other governments to stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Canada, emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights of activists around the world from intimidation and violence.

The escalating diplomatic tensions between Canada and India have brought renewed attention to the Sikh independence movement and the broader issue of state-sponsored political repression in the diaspora.
