Sikh groups to approach UN seeking justice for victims of Sikh genocide 1984

New Delhi, India (June 19, 2013): Releasing the official reports showing merely 68 conviction against more than 35000 proven cases of violence against Sikhs during November 1984, All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) and Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) announced to approach the United Nations urging to take cognizance over the continuous denial of justice to the victims of November 1984 Sikh Genocide.

Based on the reports obtained from Government of India through RTI, exposing utter denial of justice, Sikh groups will register a formal complaint with the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHCR) which examines complaints regarding gross human rights violations as in the case of November 1984.

The most recent acquittal of Sajjan Kumar and the failure of the successive governments to investigate and prosecute those who organized the countrywide violence against Sikhs during November 1984, “victims are left with no resort except seeking UN intervention” stated AISSF President Karnail Singh Peermohammad.

The gravity, scale and specially the organized nature of the genocidal attacks was concealed by the Indian governments’ portraying them as “November 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots of Delhi”. These attacks were neither “riots” nor were they confined to Delhi alone. In fact, as per new documentation collected through RTI, during November 1984, Sikhs were attacked in 18 states and more than 100 cities throughout India with specific intent to destroy the Sikh community added Peermohammad.

In support of the complaint to UNHCR, delegation of AISSF lead by President Peermohammad will visit all the states where violence against Sikhs took place to collect affidavits of the victims and related evidence. During the first stage of documenting evidence, AISSF delegation will visit the states of Jharkhand, Bihar and Chattissgarh, stated Peermohammad.
