Amritsar, Punjab (February 28, 2012): After detention of more than two years Sikh political leader Bhai Daljit Singh, Chairman of Akali Dal Panch Pardhani, is released from Central Jail, Amritsar. He was welcomed by many prominent Sikh personalities, leaders, representatives of various Sikh organizations and Sikhs outside Amritsar Jail.
Bhai Daljeet Singh was considered to be ideological leader of Sikh struggle from times of Sikh militant movement of 1980s-90s. He headed Sikh Students Federation in late 1980s to early 1990s and was one of the five members of Panthic Committee.
He was first arrested in 1996 and was detained in Maximum security jail, Nabha for more than a decade. While in jail, Bhai Daljit Singh triggered the re-organization of Sikh Students Federation, premier organization of Sikh Students. He was released in 2006 and was re-arrested on various occasions before his last arrest in 2009.
His political activity was successful in mobilizing the Sikh masses during 2006 and 2009. The Indian State and Punjab government seriously reviewed his political activity and he was finally arrested on 27 August, 2009 on false charge of attempting to revive militancy in Punjab.
Government has failed to support its’ false accusations against Bhai Daljit Singh in the courts, therefore his released, on bail, was cleared on 17 February, 2012 by Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Considering the change in circumstances since his arrest in 2009, his release is viewed as a major breakthrough for initiate consolidation and build up of Panthic power against multidimensional attacks by imperial forces of India against Sikhs.
