Chandigarh/ Punjab (December 31, 2013): It is learnt that the bail plea of Bhai Kulvir Singh Barapind, president of Akali Dal Panch Pardhani, shall be listed before Justice K. C. Puri of Punjab and Haryana High Court, for hearing on January 20, 2013.

It is notable that Justice Daya Chaudhary of the High Court had earlier refused to deliver a decision on his bail plea. She had heard the full matter in multiple hearings and the arguments had concluded on December 16, 2013. The decision was reserved for next day. But on Dec. 17 Justice Daya Chaudhary refused to pronounce any decision and asked the Chief Justice to appoint another judge to hear the matter.

Notably, Bhai Kulvir Singh Barapind has been behind the bars since September 19, 2012. Police had arrested him under preventive detention clauses 107/151 (Cr. P. C.) in wake of Bharat Bandh (India shut-down) call by National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on September 20, 2012.

Many had expressed suspicion over his arrest as Bhai Kulvir Singh’s political party Akali Dal Panch Pardhani was neutral to the Bharat Bandh call.

The suspicion was not unfounded and the police finally revealed it’s wicked plans on intervening night of September 20 and 21 when Bhai Kulvir Singh Barapind was booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Besides him, another senior leader of ADPP Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu was also booked over identical allegations.

Bhai Daljit Singh was was released from jail on bail after more than one year’s detention.

“The case is clearly motivated by political considerations and lacks any legal basis”, Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, Press Secretary of ADPP told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN).

He accused Punjab government for misusing UAPA to stifle political dissent.
