Amritsar, Punjab (October 29, 2013): Sikh nation will be observing the martyrdom day of Shaheed Beant Singh on October 31, 2013 at Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar. As an annual practice the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) has began Akhand Paath of Guru Granth Sahib Ji near Akal Takht Sahib in the memory of Bhai Beant Singh, which will conclude on October 31. After the Bhog of Akhand Paath Sahib a Ardas Samagam shall be held to mark the 29th anniversary of martyrdom of Bhai Beant Singh.

It is notable that in order to suppress the Sikh nation and the Sikh nationalist struggle, including Dharam Youdh Morcha, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had ordered armed attack on Darbar Sahib (Amritsar), the central place of the Sikhism besides other Gurdwara Sahibs across Punjab and adjoining states in June 1984.

On October 31, 1984 Bhai Beant Singh had laid his life to finish off Indira Gandhi as a punishment for her crimes against the Sikh nation. Bhai Beant Singh was shot dead by other security guards of Indira Gandhi after capturing him. Bhai Satwant Singh was another Sikhs who had shot Indira Gandhi jointly with Bhai Beant Singh. He was sentenced to death by Indian courts.

Acknowledging the sacrifice of Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh, both were declared “national Sikh martyrs” by the Sikh panth and the Akal Takht.

Sikh nationalist bodies like Dal Khalsa and Akali Dal Panch Pardhani (ADPP) have issued an appeal to the Sikh masses to participate in Shaheedi Ardas to be held in the honor of Bhai Beant Singh at Akal Takht Sahib on October 31, 2013 at 8 am.
