Jaipur/Chandigarh: A Jaipur court today convicted Sikh political prisoner Harnek Singh Bhap in 1995 Mirdha kidnapping/abduction case. Harnek Singh Bhap’s council Advocate Ajay Kumar has confirmed this information.

On 17 February, 1992 Rajendra Mirdha, the son of senior Rajasthan Congress leader Ram Niwas Mirdha, was kidnapped. As per the FIR registered in this case Rajindera Mridha was kidnapped by Sikh militants to exert pressure the Narasimha Rao government to release another political prisoner, Professor Devenderpal Singh Bhullar.
In 2004 the trial court had convicted Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya and his wife in this case. Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya was granted imprisonment for life.
Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur who maintains the list of Sikh Political Prisoners told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that Harnek Singh Bhap was convicted today (Oct. 5) by the trial court and quantum of punishment will be pronounced tomorrow (Oct. 6). “Given the charges in this case, he would get imprisonment for life”, he added.
Extending further information, Advocate Manjhpur said that there were 3 pending cases against Harnek Singh Bhap –
1. FIR No. 57/17-02-1995 U/S 364A, 365, 343, 346, 201 IPC, Police station Ashok Nagar, Jaipur.
2. FIR No. 84/1995 U/S 307, 363, 420, 468, 120B, 471, IPC, Police Station Malvia Nagar, Jaipur.
3. FIR No. 44/1995, U/S 176, 177, 216, 120B, 420, 468 IPC, Explosive Act, Arms Act, Police Station Vishal Nagar, Jaipur.
He is confined in Central Jail, Jaipur, Rajasthan and his custody counts from 10 May, 2004 to till date.
“In Ashok Nagar Case, also called Mirdha kidnapping case, is the most important against him and he will be awarded imprisonment for life in this case. In rest of the two cases he has completed the terms of possible sentences”, Advo. Manjhpur said.
