Amritsar, Punjab: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh yesterday said that a meeting of five Sikh jathedars will be convened on January 02 to discuss the issue of Sikh political prisoners languishing in various jails in India even after serving decades terms of their sentences.

Giani Gurbachan Singh criticized Punjab and Central government, saying that both had not done anything so far “even as time was running out”.

It may be recalled that Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, a Sikh from Haryana state, is on a continuous hunger strike at Gurdwara Lakhnaur Sahib near Ambala since November 14.

An Indian Express news quotes Giani Gurbachan Singh saying that Punjab government had promised a number of times to get the issue addressed, but there was no result yet.

“We have handed over the list of Sikh prisoners who we want released. But they continue to languish in jails” said Giani Gurbachan Singh.

“If this issue is not addressed at the earliest, we will discuss the matter at meeting of five Singh Sahibs on January 2”, he added.
