Sikh Prisoner Bhai Nand Singh Released; Clarity on Other Names Expected In Coming Days

November 15, 2019 | By

Chandigarh: On 550th Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Ji, the Government of India (GoI) had announced to release eight Sikh political prisoners who have been kept behind the bars despite having completed minimum mandatory terms of their sentences.

One such prisoner, Bhai Nand Singh- who was undergoing ‘improvement for life’ and had completed minimum mandatory term of his sentence was released from Central Jail Patiala last night. Parminder Singh Amloh of Sikh Relief received Bhai Nand Singh outside the jail on his release last evening.

It is notable that the Government of India did not disclose the names of eight Sikh political prisoners who were to be released, and this has led to confusion as different names are making rounds in media reports.

When contacted by the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur- who maintains the list of Sikh political prisoners, said that there has been information about release papers pertaining to some Sikh political prisoners reaching the authorities in past few days. Some names are also being published in various media reports. But it is advisable to wait and let the releases realise as names of Sikh prisoners were not disclosed officially by the Government of India.

On being asked about the case of Nand Singh he Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur said that Nanad Singh s/o Sh. Khushal Singh is a resident of village Suroon (P.S. Kheri Gandian) in Patiala district. He was sentenced to imprisonment for life in case FIR no. 22/95; PS East Chandigarh under section 302, 380 and 392 read with section 120B of Indian Penal Code.  Nand Singh was in prison since 1995 and his jail conduct was good. His case was a fit case for premature release as per the law.
