SBS Nagar, Punjab (January 30, 2014): As per information [o]n 28 January 2014, in the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Court of Session Judge, Neelam Arora, five Sikh persons, namely Giani Parshotam Singh, Harminder Singh, Gurpreet Singh Khalsa, Prabhdyal Singh and Dharminder Singh were acquitted from charges under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
In 2010, the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Police had charged them with allegedly conspiring in ‘terrorism’ related activities.
According to defense lawyers Advocate Ajit Singh Sian and A. K. Sareen the Police could not produce any definite proof against these Sikhs, which led to the collapse of the case.
It is worth pointing out that these five were arrested on the basis of an ‘anonymous’ tip off received by the police.
According to Sikh Organization of Prisoners Welfare (SOPW), the prisoners welfare NGO have been supporting these Sikhs since their arrest and although Prabhdyal Singh and Dharminder Singh were released on bail after a year in prison, Parshotam Singh, Harminder Singh, and Gurpreet Singh were still lodged in Nabha Maximum Security prison.
