Sri Guru Granth Sahib World Sikh University proposes encyclopedia on Sikh music

Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab (October 19, 2013): It is learnt that the advisory board of Guru Nanak Dev centre for Sikh music at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib organised its first meeting on October 14, 2013 on the premises of the campus, under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor, Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia. An encyclopaedia of Sikh music (Gurmat Sangeet), to be completed in a time period of 11 years, was also proposed on the occasion.

According to The Tribune: [i]n the meeting, various aspects of compilation of an encyclopaedia on Sikh music were discussed [and] [i]t was decided that the proposed encyclopedia will include as many as 3,000 entries about Gurmat Sangeet and Sikh tradition of ‘Dhadi and Kawishri’.

As per informationthe project is expected to be completed in 11 years. The encyclopedia will be published in five volumes. In the first year, suggestions will be solicited from the Sikh intellectuals and experts.

In a time period of two years, the first volume of the selected entries will be published. Experts from other universities, including international universities, will also be roped in for the cause.

The print edition of the encyclopaedia will be accompanied by audio-visuals for the entries as well, said the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia.

The Academic Council and Syndicate of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University had given its nod for the establishment of three research departments namely, Guru Arjun Dev centre for Guru Granth Sahib studies, Bhai Gurdas centre for Sikh studies and Guru Nanak Dev centre for Sikh music.

Dr Gurnam Singh and Dr Paramvir Singh from Punjabi University, Dr Gurpreet Kaur from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Prof Kartar Singh, director, Gurmat Sangeet Academy, Anandpur Sahib, Dr Jasvir Singh Sabar from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Dr Kanwaljit Singh, dean academic affairs, Dr BS Bhatia, dean research, Dr Pritpal Singh, registrar, and Dr Bir Bikram Singh, dean students’ welfare (DSW), were present on the occasion of the first board meeting of the Guru Nanak Dev Centre.
