Chandigarh: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has here today declared Swaran Singh Salaria as its candidate for Lok Sabha by-election for Gurdaspur seat to be held on October 11th. On Wednesday the Punjab Congress fielded Amarinder Singh loyalist and chief of state unit Sunil Jakhar for the impeding poll. The seat fell vacant following the death of BJP MP Vinod Khanna.
“Swarn Singh Salariya will be the BJP candidate for the Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency bypoll,” state BJP secretary Vineet Joshi reportedly said.
“Salariya is a native of Chauhana village in Gurdaspur.”
Kavita Khanna, wife of the late BJP MP, was also considered a front-runner for the party ticket. She had been participating in the party meetings in Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency, notes Outlook.
The last date for filing of nominations for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bye-election is September 22 while the model code is already in force, reports The Indian Express (IE).
