Swine Flu epidemic: More than 16K cases, 926 deaths registered in India; 36 deaths in Punjab, 22 in Haryana

New Delhi: Swine Flu epidemic is spreading across Indian subcontinent. As per reports the H1N1 virus has infested more than 16,000 people in the subcontinent where as 926 people have already died because of Swine Flu.

According to collated data from the Health Ministry till February 24 this year, the total number of deaths due to the disease has reached 926 while the number of affected persons in various states stood at 16,235.

The Health Ministry data yesterday had showed that 875 people had died due to the disease while 15,413 people had been affected with the H1N1 virus.

The maximum toll was reported from Rajasthan, which has been the worst affected state, with 234 deaths till February 24 while the number of affected persons has risen to 4,884.

In Gujarat, the death toll due to the disease has reached 231 while 3527 people have been affected by it.

As many as 127 people have perished due to the disease in Madhya Pradesh while the number of affected persons in the state stood at 716. In Maharashtra, the death toll has risen to 112 while the number of affected persons was 1,221. Telangana, Karnataka and Punjab too have witnessed 54, 39 and 38 deaths respectively.

With one more person succumbing to swine flu, the death toll due to deadly H1N1 virus has climbed to 36 in Punjab this year while 22 lives have been lost in neighbouring Haryana so far.

“A 58-year-old doctor who ran his private clinic in Ludhiana died due to swine flu. With his death, 36 persons have so far succumbed to the disease in Punjab while 152 patients have tested positive,” Deepak Bhatia, State Surveillance Officer of Punjab Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, said today.

In neighbouring Haryana, with two more persons succumbing to swine flu during the past two days, the toll has now reached 22 this year while the number of positive cases stands at 148.

As part of Centre’s guidelines to states issued to combat the H1N1 virus, health workers have been asked to screen people with symptoms of the flu on the basis of their severity and categorise them.

In Delhi, the Health Ministry said that although the number of deaths is eight, there has been a rise in the number of affected persons which currently stood at 2,456.
