Toronto, Canada (June 11, 2014): According to information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the Sikh sangat of Toronto organized a “Kesri car rally” to mark 30th anniversary of army attack on Dabar Sahib complex in Amritsar and other Sikh gurdwaras in Punjab and adjoining states.
Since 1984, the month of June has had a jarring significance for the global Sikh community. It is the month of the Tīsrā Ghallughara, the Sikh Holocaust, the Sikh Nakhba, the catastrophe which continues to provoke deeply felt emotions, evoke unanswered questions and to occupy a central presence in the collective Sikh psyche.
The systematic killing of Sikhs 30 years ago in 1984 meets the 1948 United Nations legal definition of Genocide and must be recognised as such by the UK Government and the international community.
It is learnt that hundreds of Sikhs from New York and neighboring States took part in a “Sovereignty March” outside the United Nations Headquarters on June 06, 2014. The march was organized by US based Human Rights and advocacy group called "Sikhs for Justice". The march was held to mark the 30th anniversary of Indian army attack on Darbar Sahib (Amritsar) and other Sikh gurdwaras in June 1984.
Urging the UN and the US to put the perpetrators of army attack of June 1984 on trail for war-crimes, the Dal Khalsa head Harchranjit Singh Dhami said many innocent pilgrims were shot and bombed after they were arrested and their hands tied in violation of international rules and norms.
Protesting against the attack by Indian Army at Akal Takhat, Darbra Sahib complex and various other Sikh gurdwaras in June 1984, the UK Sikh diaspora held a march in central London. The march from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square involved sloganeering and chanting.
London, United Kingdom (May 11, 2014): ‘Sikhs in the Diaspora were in effect not accorded their rights 30 years ago and treated as second class citizens. The UK Government, supported by other governments have a moral and legal duty to establish the truth of the events of 30 yeas ago. This is the least they can do for their law-abiding Sikh citizens.
US based human rights group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) will submit a complaint to the UN assistant secretary general for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic seeking UN investigation into the gross human rights violations allegedly committed by Indian Army during June 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib and other Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab and adjoining states.
Sikh sangat of Toronto shall be honouring Bhai Jawinder Singh Maloa, son of Sikh martyr – Shaheed Beant Singh. Local sources told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that a ceremony shall be held on May 11 at Gurdwara Jyot Parkash, Toronto to honour Bhai Jaswinder Singh Maloa.
