Chandigarh: In wake of constant rainfall in Punjab and catchment areas of Punjab rivers in Himachal Pradesh the situation in Punjab is alarming as the water level in rivers and dams is nearing the maximum permissible limit. There has been constant rain fall in the region for past 36 hours now leading to increased influx of water in Bhakhra and Pong Dams. The concerned departments have issued letters stating that the flood gates of these dams could be opened any time.
Meanwhile the whether department has stated that the rainfall may continue for two more days. After this announcement the government has issued alert in the state and Army has been reportedly alerted.
Local administration of various districts has been told to make arrangement of boats and stay prepared to help people living in the vicinity of the rivers to move them to secure areas in case of flood like situation.
Floods Gates of Sukhna Lake Opened:
Reports of roof collapse are emerging from various places across the state leaving several people dead and injured.
The flood gates of Sukhna Lake of Chandigarh were opened after several years today. As the outflow of water from Sukhna lake would lead to further increase of water in Ghaggar river, Patiala and Sangrur districts of Punjab are put on alert as the water may affect villages located in vicinity of Ghaggar river.
People residing in villages near Beas and Ravi rivers are told to stay away from the rivers as the Bhakhra and Pong Dam managements have stated that the flood gates of dams could be opened at any time as the water level of these dams in closing the maximum permissible level.
Punjab chief minister has advised the people to stay in their homes in wake of heavy rainfall. Various district administrations have announced to close the schools for two days in wake of alert issued by the whether department.
