Two Manpreet Badals are contesting from Bathinda; Namesake Manpreet is Sukhbir’s trick: PPP Chief

Bathinda, Punjab (April 05, 2014): Bathinda Lok Sabha constituency is going to witness intense election contest as People’s Party of Punajb (PPP) chief Manpreet Badal has joined hands with the opposition Congress party to take on Shiromani Akali Dal Badal heavyweight Harsimrat Badal.

Harsimrat is sister-in-law of Manpreet Badal who had departed his ways few years back from SAD (Badal) led by his uncle Parkash Singh Badal (CM, Punjab) and his son Sukhbir Badal (Deputy CM).

So, contest from Bathinda is interesting as Punjab CM and Deputy CM have put all their efforts to secure win for Harsimrat, wife of Sukhbir Badal.

Another interesting point is that as per certain media reports two Manpreet Badals are contesting from Bathinda seat.

As per information one Manpreet Singh from Badal village has filed papers from the Bathinda.

It is being considered that this is an attempt to be-fool the voters to the detriment of Manpreet Badal’s votes.

Fielding a namesake candidate against a strong opponent is not a new tactic in state politics, but it has seldom achieved the desired results.

An analysis of certain such contests in the past reveals that contrary to the belief of politicians, voters cannot be befooled with such tactics.

Manpreet Badal had faced a similar situation during the assembly elections in 2012 from the Gidderbaha seat. While he had polled 31,906 votes, his namesake, an Independent candidate, got 598 votes. Manpreet had lost the election by 20,000 votes to Congress candidate Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

In the same elections from Bhucho Mandi (SC), Ajaib Singh Bhatti of the Congress too faced his namesake. Bhatti had won the seat and was polled 57,515 votes while his namesake could get 781 votes.

Similarly, SAD candidate Amarjit Singh Sidhu faced another Amarjit Singh Sidhu from the Talwandi Sabo assembly seat. The Akali leader had got 45,206 votes while his namesake polled just 280 votes.

Meanwhile, Manpreet Badal has alleged the SAD (Badal) had fielded a dummy candidate against him. According to Manpreet Badal, “it shows that ‘master-strategist’ Sukhbir had conceded the defeat of his wife Harsimrat Kaur”.

Manpreet said: “I was expecting better planning and strategy by Sukhbir to defeat me, but not such a petty trick”.
