U.K. Parliament votes in favour of starting Brexit process

February 2, 2017 | By

London/Chandigarh: As per media reports, [t]he British government looks set to comfortably meet its plans of triggering Brexit negotiations by the end of next month, after winning a clear majority in a vote for the bill in the House of Commons as it passes through Parliament on Wednesday night.

“MPs voted by 498 to 114 to support the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill, which gives the government the parliamentary approval necessary to trigger Article 50, which gives E.U. member-states a two-year period to withdraw. The government was forced to bring the legislation before Parliament following a Supreme Court verdict last month, which held that the executive’s prerogative was not sufficient”, notes a report in The Hindu.

The Scottish National Party’s Europe spokesman Stephen Gethins described the vote in a statement as “a devastating act of sabotage on Scotland’s economy”.

A majority of voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland in last summer’s referendum backed remaining in the EU, while voters in England and Wales supported Brexit.
