Vital political development – Beant Singh’s family says: “No objections to release of Sikhs in Burrail Jail”

Chandigarh/ Punjab (December 19, 2013): In a significant political development after yesterday’s meeting between Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and three representatives of the Bandi Singhs Rihai Morcha, former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s family members have given a statement before media that they have no objections to the release of three Sikhs confined in Burrail jail for their connection with assassination of CM Beant Singh.

Gurkirtal Kotli says: No Objection to the release of Sikhs in Burrail Jail

The PTC News channel aired statement of Gurkirat Kotli, Congress MLA from Khanna, in this regard. Gurkirat is is grand-son of former Punjab CM Beant Singh.

In this short TV interview Gurkirat Kotli said that his family has no objections to the release of Sikhs whose release is being demanded by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa.

He said in clear terms that Beant Singh’s family has no objections if Gurmeet Singh, Shamsher Singh and Lakhwinder Singh are released from prison.

The way PTC News (a news channel that is considered to be under strong influence of Punjab’s ruling Badal cult) has reported these statement with prominence, it seems that it could be a turning point in this matter.

It is notable that statement from Lalit Makan’s daughter in the case of Bhai Ranjit Singh Kukki Gill had played a significant role in his release from prison.

It may be recalled that Gurmeet Singh, Shamsher Singh and Lakhwinder Singh were sentenced to imprisonment for life for their involvement in Punjab CM Beant Singh’s assassination on August 31, 1995.

It is pertinent to note that the trial court has passed following remarks about these three persons:

“1642. Above all, there is also nothing on the file to say that these convicts were previous offenders or involved in any other criminal activities and as such there is no possibility of their reformation and rehabilitation. On the contrary, their act and conduct coupled with their roles forces this court to note that atleast these three convicts can be reformed and rehabilitated as a responsible citizen of India” (State v. Gurmeet Singh etc.; Sessions case no. 2-A of 1995).
