Two political groups named – Shiomani Akali Dal Badal, led by Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal; and Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi), led by Paramjeet Singh Sarna of Delhi, – are the main contestants in this election.
As per reports Badal Dal leaders including Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal have shifted their base to Delhi to campaign in support of Badal Dal’s candidates.
It is notable that Badal Dal is controlling Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee, Amritsar (SGPC) another statutory body that control the affairs of various historic Sikh Gurudwaras in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh and Chandigarh. DSGMC was currently under the control of Sarna Dal.
As per media reports Sarna Dal enjoys support from Congress party where as Badal Dal which is presently the main opposition party in this election, is being supported by its traditional ally – the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).
“The DSGMC elections also assume greater importance in view of the fact that the assembly elections in Delhi are due later this year. The result of this election will hint at the winning prospects of parties in the assembly polls” reports Mail Online India.
