Congress leader Shahshi Taroor says Afzal Guru’s Hanging was wrong, badly handled

New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today said that Afzal Guru’s hanging was wrong and badly handled. He said that Afzal Guru’s body should have been returned to the family.

“I think the hanging was both wrong and badly handled. Family should have been warned, given a last meeting and body returned,” he tweeted on second death anniversary of Afzal Guru.

Shashi Tharoor’s comments come after five Congress legislators in Jammu and Kashmir said in a signed statement that Afzal Guru’s hanging was a “mistake”.

Congress distances itself from Tharoor comment on Guru hanging

Meanwhile, Congress party has distanced itself from party MP Shashi Tharoor’s remarks about Afzal Guru’s hanging.

“Due process of law was followed. Supreme Court convicted him and the execution was the culmination of the judicial process. In no way, any law was contravened,” party spokesman Ajoy Kumar said.

“Government was not involved… Government had no option but to execute the court order. Individuals may have different positions,” he told reporters.

He was asked a host of questions over Tharoor’s tweet “I think the hanging was both wrong & badly handled. Family should have been warned, given a last meeting & body returned.”

It is notable that India had secrets hanged Afazl Guru, a Kashmiri national, on February 9, 2013 in side Delhi based Tihar Jail. He body was reportedly buried inside the jail.
