New Delhi/Chandigarh: Ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have further escalated. India today issued a statement revealing that Canada, in a diplomatic communication, has pointed India’s High Commissioner to Canada as ‘person of interest’ in an ongoing investigation in Canada.
“We have received a diplomatic communication from Canada yesterday suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are ‘persons of interest’ in a matter related to an investigation in that country”, reads a press release issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Monday (October 14, 2024).
The press release states that “the Government of India strongly rejects these preposterous imputations and ascribes them to the political agenda of the Trudeau Government that is centered around vote bank politics”.
Later in the day, MEA issued another press release stating “the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials”.
The relationship between Canada and India are in strain since Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed outside a Gurdwara Sahib in Vancouver last year. Canada has arrested four accused in this case. Canada maintains that Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s assassination was linked to the agents of Indian government.
