New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India (SCI) on Monday said that it would take up pleas pertaining to whether or not the linking of Aadhaar Cards should be mandatory for government and non-government services only after concluding the Delhi and Center dispute.
Meanwhile, the Union Government informed the constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice of India Deepak Mishara that it is willing to extend up to March 31 next year the deadline fixed for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various schemes.
The bench, also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, said only the Constitution bench would pass an interim order in the matter, said the media reports.
It is widely asked by the petitioners that the SCI should issue an interim stay order against government’s decision for making the linking of Aadhaar Card mandatory for all the basic services needed by an average citizen of the country including government sponsored well fare schemes.
Presently, the SCI is hearing a batch of pleas filed by the Delhi government against the Delhi high court verdict which had held that Delhi is not a state and the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) is its administrative head, reads a quote from a report published in an English vernacular.
On October 30, a bench headed by the CJI had said that a constitution bench would be constituted and Aadhaar-related matters would come up for hearing before it.
But it was on November 13th that SCI refused to entertain a plea challenging the linking of mobile numbers with Aadhaar, saying several similar petitions were already pending before it, notes The Tribune (TT).
