Patiala/Ludhiana (July 15, 2010): Sikh Students Federation welcomed the decision taken by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib to address happenings of November 1984 as “Sikh Genocide”. SSF President Parmjeet Singh Gazi said that in November 1984 Sikhs were subjected to an organized massacre in 18 States and 110 cities of India. Electoral lists were used to identify Sikh houses and obtain information regarding members, their sex and age. SSF claims that the pattern of attack and array in which killers were equipped shows that it was well organized.
“It must be noted that Sikhs were killed and Sikh women were subjected to mass rape just because they were Sikhs, which shows the existence of intent to destroy Sikhs, physically and mentally, in whole or in part.” said Gazi, who criticized media for attempting to veil the truth by using terms ‘riots’ or merely ‘Delhi riots’ for 1984 Sikh Genocide.
Parmjeet Singh Gazi said: “The decision taken by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib that November 1984 massacre was Sikh Genocide, has its own significance and it would work as major boost for the efforts of Canadian Sikhs who have filed a petition in Parliament of Ottawa to get recognition for Sikh Genocide.”
As per media news, Dal Khalsa and Shiromani Panthic Council has also wecomed move taken by Jathedars in a meeting held on 14 July, 2010 at Amritsar. Kanwarpal Singh, Secretary of Dal Khalsa, is reported to have said that after 26 years of the 1984 riots, Akal Takht had finally corrected the wrong done to the Sikhs and directed the community and others to call it a “genocide” instead of “riots” as was being “widely and deliberately done by the mainstream media, historians, scholars and political leaders.”The SAD-led Punjab government should convene a special session of the Assembly and put up a resolution referring to the 1984 riots as “genocide” for adoption,” he said.
