November 30, 2023 (New York, NY) — The Sikh Coalition released the following statement in response to the chilling details contained within a now-unsealed indictment focused on an alleged plot by an Indian national reportedly conspiring with an Indian government employee to assassinate a Sikh in the United States.
“We are alarmed and disturbed by the information unveiled in the indictment yesterday, including the defendant’s alleged assertion that there are ‘so many targets’ for assassinations among the U.S.-based Sikh community. We are also grateful that the U.S. government was able to foil this plot.”
“It remains a fundamental and essential fact that all in our country are entitled to peaceful freedom of speech regarding their political views, and we condemn this and any attempt to infringe upon the safety and civil rights of Sikhs and the sovereignty of the United States by India.”
“Sangat members who fear they are under threat (and are comfortable doing so) should contact the FBI immediately. In the meantime, we continue to urge our elected officials to commit themselves to the safety of all, denounce this and other malicious behavior, and respond to the clear and present danger of transnational repression—including by passing the Transnational Repression Policy Act, which has been endorsed by the majority of the Sikh civil rights organization in this country.”
