United Akali Dal (UAD) chief Mohkam Singh arrested; More arrests likely

Ludhaina/ Bathinda: The Ludhiana police yesterday arrested United Akali Dal (UAD) chief Bhai Mohkam Singh under preventive detention clauses (Sections 107/151) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

He was kept at a local police station till late evening. His family members tired to secure bail for him but could not succeed.

While talking to reporters Bhai Mohkam Singh said that the Punjab government was stifling the Sikh voice to appease it’s Delhi heads.

The police presented him before DCP who sent him to Central Jail, Ludhiana under preventive detention. It is notable that two perons – Jasbir Singh and Shamsher Singh, who were arrested along with Bhai Mohkam Singh were release by the police.

Meanwhile there are reports that the Bathinda police has arrested Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, General Secretary of United Akali Dal, from Goniana Mandi. The police has reportedly booked him under s. 107/151 Cr. PC at Tharmal plant (Bathinda) police station. He is currently lodged in Bathinda jail.

Source said that these arrests were part of police crackdown against fasting Sikh activist Surat Singh Khalsa’s struggle. Surat Singh Khalsa is on fast unto death since January  16, 2015 to secure release of Sikh political prisoners who have completed their jail terms.

Source said that there could be more arrests in coming days as the Sikh organizations have declared to strengthen Surat Singh Khalsa’s struggle.
