Chandigarh/Jalandhar, Punjab (January 02, 2013): It is learnt that some women awareness groups have demanded arrest of Punjabi singers namely Jazzy B, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Diljit Dosanjh.
“Terming their songs as offensive, vulgar, provocative and deplorable, ‘Istri Jagriti Manch’, a women’s awareness group, has demanded arrest of famous Punjabi singers Jazzy B, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Diljit Dosanjh” YesPunjab has reported.
Severely criticizing the content of the lyrics of the songs sung by these singers, the women’s group has reportedly asked the government to book and arrest them under ‘Indecent representation of Women Act 1986’.
The Act prohibits indecent representation of women through any means.
‘Istri Jagriti Manch’ president Charanjit Kaur Barnala and General Secretary Amandeep Kaur Deol said that the crime graph in the state was on the rise and number of cases of rapes and kidnappings were going up.
Terming the content of the lyrics of these singers as ‘intolerable’ the women leaders said that it was the need of the hour that the singers polluting the atmosphere of the society be put behind bars.
IJM representatives said that even as there was a national outrage against rapes and kidnappings the singers were singing songs provoking the youth to indulge in such crime and indecent behaviour.
He said Honey Singh was singing a song like ‘Main Hun Balatkari’ while Diljit Dosanjh has a song which goes saying ‘Oye Aaja Tainu Kidnap Karan Sohniye’.
They alleged that to top it all Jazzy B has come out with a song ‘Muni nu Manga lao ji, Addhe paise paa lao ji, Kunde Jinde laa lao ji’.
Alleging that the songs and their presentation was anti-women and against the established norms and ethos of the society, the Women Group said that the singers were only after name and fame and had nothing to do with or contribute to the society. Instead, they were giving a wrong message to the youth, which unfortunately follows them.
It is notable that Istri Jagriti Manch has launched a campaign against singers who are representing women in a derogatory manner in their songs, lyrics or videos.
